Project Overview:
The Johnsons, an elderly couple in their late 70s, reached out to SAM for help in modifying their home so they could safely age in place. Their primary concerns were preventing falls and ensuring comfort while maintaining the cozy, traditional feel of their beloved home.
Challenges Faced:
- Aesthetic Concerns: The couple was worried about accessibility features clashing with the charm and character of their home.
- Complex Coordination: The project required the involvement of multiple trades to install devices like a stairlift and structural changes while ensuring compliance with accessibility standards.
Solutions Implemented:
- Installing Safety Features:
Grab bars near the shower and toilet, as well as non-slip flooring throughout the home, were added for fall prevention.
- Stairlift and Ramp Integration:
A custom stairlift was installed on the main staircase, and a discreet outdoor ramp was added to ensure mobility between levels and ease of entering the home.
- Preserving Aesthetics:
SAM used materials and designs that blended the accessibility features seamlessly into the home’s traditional style. For instance, grab bars were selected to complement the bathroom’s classic fixtures, and the stairlift was chosen in neutral tones that matched the home’s décor.
Outcomes:
Additionally, the modifications increased the overall value of the home, making future resale more appealing.
The couple can now move around their home safely, reducing the risk of injuries and promoting their long-term independence.
The design preserved the charm of their home while incorporating the necessary safety and accessibility features.
